Transferring project management to a client or new team member

Learn how to hand off management permissions to another account when delivering a project to a client or switching team members internally. This covers inviting, changing roles, updating the billing owner, and leaving the project.

In Studio.Design, accounts and projects are managed separately, and a project can be shared across multiple accounts. This means you can hand off a project by granting admin permissions to the account you're transferring it to.

Tip: If the project is linked to a workspace, member management is handled at the workspace level instead. For details, see Inviting users to a workspace.

Handoff process

The handoff process involves 4 steps. Step 3 only applies if you're on a paid plan and are also transferring billing.

Step 1. Have the new owner create a Studio.Design account

If the person you're handing off to doesn't already have a Studio.Design account, ask them to sign up on the account registration page. If they already have an account, move on to Step 2.

Step 2. Invite the new owner as an Owner

Invite the new owner's account to the project with the Owner role. If they're already participating as an Editor, change their role to Owner instead.

Step 3. Have the new owner become the billing owner

Changing the billing owner must be done from the new owner's account. The current billing owner can't make this change.

  1. Have the new owner log in to Studio.Design.

  2. Open the home dashboard for the project.

  3. From the menu on the left, go to Plan & Billing > Billing Information.

  4. Click Change Billing Owner and follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: If the current and new billing owners use different payment currencies, you won't be able to change the billing owner.

Step 4. Have the original owner leave the project

Once the handoff is complete, remove the original owner's account from the project if needed. If they'll continue to be involved in the project, they can stay on as a member instead.

Note: A billing owner can't remove themselves from a project. Be sure to change the billing owner in Step 3 before leaving.
