What Are Roles?

In Studio, a "Project" refers to a space where you can create and manage websites. You can invite other users to collaborate within a project.

When inviting members, you can assign one of the following roles:

  • Owner

  • Editor

This article explains the permissions of each role and how to change roles later. For instructions on how to invite members, refer to Inviting and Managing Project Members.

Types of Roles and Their Permissions

There are three types of roles in a project:

Tips: For more granular permission settings, consider using either advanced permission controls (available for Business plans and above) or a paid workspace plan.

1. Owner

Owners have full access to all project functions. You can assign an unlimited number of Owners to a project.

2. Billing Owner

A Billing Owner has the same permissions as an Owner. However, this role isn’t selectable manually. When a project Owner upgrades to a paid plan, they automatically become the Billing Owner.

To change the Billing Owner, the new Billing Owner must complete the upgrade process themselves. For more details, see How to Change the Billing Owner.

3. Editor

Editors can access the design editor, CMS, and forms, but they cannot manage plans or view billing history.

Form Viewing Restriction (Available only for legacy plans: Starter, CMS, Business)

You can set viewing restrictions for form response results for editors. This is a useful option when you want editors to be able to work with design and CMS but "don't want them to view form response results."

For more details about viewing restrictions, see Form Response Viewing Restrictions.

Writer (Available only for legacy plans: Starter, CMS, Business)

This permission level is available in legacy plans (Business and CMS plans).CMS plans can have up to 3 writers, while Business plans have no limit. Writers can perform certain editing tasks in the CMS dashboard and editor. See the table below for details.

How to Change Roles

Note: Permissions cannot be changed while the member status is "invited."

1. Open the Member List

Click the [+] button in the top-right corner of the screen, or navigate to the [Members] menu from the dashboard's [Home] section.

2. Update the Role

Click the current role of the member to open the dropdown menu, then select the new role. Changes are applied immediately.
