What is a role?
A role defines the scope of actions and permissions a user has. Roles are set for each user who joins a project or workspace, and every user is always assigned one of the available roles.
For instructions on inviting users to a project, see Invite users to a project.
Tip: For more detailed control over what each role can do, you can use a workspace (Team plan) or advanced permission settings.
For details, see the articles below.
Types of roles and what they can do
Here's an overview of the three types of roles you can assign to members, and what each one allows.
1. Owner
This role manages the entire project.
Owners have unrestricted access to every part of the project, including the editor, all dashboards, member invitations, and plan/billing management.
A project can have multiple owners—there's no limit to the number of owners.
Tip: We recommend having more than one owner
If multiple people are managing a project together, we recommend setting up more than one owner. That way, even if one owner can't log in for some reason, the other owners can continue managing the project.
2. Billing owner
This role is responsible for managing the project's billing.
This role only exists on paid projects, and only one person can hold this role per project.
In addition to having the same permissions as an owner, the billing owner can manage the project's payment information.
When an owner upgrades a project to a paid plan, they automatically become the billing owner.
You can change the billing owner later. Any owner who has already set up billing information for their account can change their own role to billing owner.
For details, see Change a project's billing owner.
3. Editor
This role can create content and manage certain parts of the project.
Editors can use the design editor, CMS, and forms, but can't change the plan or view billing history.
Tip: Setting more detailed permissions for members
If you'd like to fine-tune what members can do, use one of the following options:
Set advanced permission restrictions for project members (requires editor permissions, Business plan or higher)
Use workspace permission restrictions (requires the Workspace Team plan (a paid plan))

Permissions available only on legacy plans
Form view restrictions (available only on legacy plans: Starter, CMS, Business)
Form view restrictions (available only on legacy plans: Starter, CMS, Business)
You can restrict editors from viewing form responses. This is useful when you want someone to be able to work on design or CMS content but not see form submission results. For details on view restrictions, see Restrict access to form responses.
Change a user's role
Here's how to change the role of a user who's part of your project.
Only the project's billing owner and owners can make this change.
Open the [Home] tab in the project dashboard.
Select [Members] to open the member list.
Tip: If the project is linked to a workspace, you'll see the workspace's member list instead.
For instructions and things to keep in mind, see Invite users to a workspace.
Click the role of the user you want to change.
Open the dropdown menu and select the new role. The change takes effect right away.
When you can't change a role
You can't change a member's role from owner to editor if either of the following applies:
They're the project's billing owner
They're the only owner of the workspace
In either case, first assign another member as the billing owner or workspace owner, and then try changing the role again.
