Using Studio CMS properties: Display categories and tags on CMS article pages

Learn how to display categories and tags on detail pages for blog posts or news articles created with Studio.Design CMS. This guide covers setting properties on items, configuring display in the design editor, and linking to list pages.

Point: What is Studio CMS?

Studio.Design CMS is a Content Management System (CMS) feature that lets you structure, manage, and update content right inside Studio.Design. By combining models, items, and properties, you can manage frequently updated article content like blogs and news in one place.

For more on how Studio.Design CMS works and the basics of using it, check out the articles below.

Before you start

The steps in this article assume that you've already created your CMS article content. Make sure you've completed the following:

  1. In the CMS Dashboard, create an article-type model (CMS Model) and CMS article items (CMS Items).

  2. In the Design Editor, use a dynamic page to create an article page linked to the CMS article model you created in step 1.

For an overview of the full process from article creation to publishing, see the article below.

Step 1. Organize article items with categories and tags

Follow Add categories and tags to Studio.Design CMS article content to add categories and tags to your article items.

Step 2. Add a box to display categories and tags on your article page

Place a box for displaying categories and tags on the dynamic page that displays the article content you created in the Before you start section.

  1. Open the Pages panel and select the dynamic page you want to edit.

  2. Add a text box to hold your categories and tags.

If the box doesn't land where you wanted it, use the Layers panel or similar tools to move it into the layer structure you want.

Step 3. Connect the text box to your CMS property

Follow Link a box element to a CMS property in the Design Editor to connect the text box to your CMS property.

Step 4. Style your categories and tags

Use the tabs in the right panel to fine-tune the design.

For more tips, check out the Box design settings and Box types categories.

Step 5. Link categories and tags to their list pages

Linking each category or tag to its list page of CMS articles dynamically filtered by category or tag helps readers move more easily around your CMS content.

For instructions on adding internal site links to a box element, see How to set up different types of links > 2. Set up a link to another page within the project.

Note: Links can only be set when the category or tag property is added as a reference property.

Step 6. Check your setup

Confirm how things look and check the publish status.

  1. Open the Live Preview and check that the categories and tags are showing up correctly.

  2. Check how it looks on your live site.

    • Make sure each of your CMS items has a status of Published.

    • If everything looks good, publish the site from the Publish panel.

    • If your site is already live, use Update Site to push the changes to your live site.

Frequently asked questions

Q. I want to swap the multi-select property linked to my box for a single-select property. How do I do that?

A. You can't change the property type directly, so you'll need to add a new box and start fresh.

When you link a multi-select property to a box, the box automatically has [Connect as list] enabled. When that's on, clicking the [Text] input field in the [Text] tab won't let you choose a property from the CMS model linked to the article page.

Q. Can I display tags or categories in a dynamic list?

A. Yes, you can do this with a CMS List.

Just place a text box inside the CMS List and link it to a property using the same steps described in this article.

Q. I'm seeing the error "Some items aren't showing up on the live site."

If items aren't appearing on your live site, check the item's publish status in the CMS Dashboard to confirm it's set to "Published."

CMS items have built-in publish management — only items with a status property of "Published" will appear on your live site.

For more details and step-by-step instructions, see CMS properties: Status and publish date.
