Using different accounts to purchase a Studio.Store paid template and subscribe to a paid plan

You can use separate accounts for purchasing a Studio.Store template and subscribing to a paid plan. Learn the basic concept and common workflow patterns for splitting the buyer and subscriber roles.

Purchasing a template on Studio.Store and subscribing to a paid plan for a project are separate actions. Both are done while logged in to Studio with your Studio account.

Purchasing a template

  1. Go to Studio.Store and open the detail page for the template you'd like to use.

  2. Click the [Purchase] button in the upper right corner of the screen and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the purchase.

  3. Once the purchase is complete, a new project with the template applied is automatically created.

The Owner of the created project is the account that purchased the template.

For a detailed walkthrough of the template purchase process, see our Studio.Store Template Purchase Guide.

The project created after purchasing a template

The new project created after purchasing a template has the purchasing account as the Owner, and it starts on the Free plan.

You can use the project on the Free plan to work on your design and layout. When you're ready to publish or need additional features, upgrade to a paid plan at that point.

Subscribing to a paid plan for your project

You don't need to purchase a template and subscribe to a paid plan at the same time. When you're ready, you can upgrade to a paid plan directly from the project.

  1. Open the project you'd like to upgrade to a paid plan.

  2. Click [Plans & Billing] at the top of the project dashboard.

  3. Click the [Upgrade] button for the plan you'd like.

  4. Review the details, enter your payment information, and confirm.

  5. The account that subscribes to the paid plan becomes the Billing Owner of that project.

Common workflow examples

Here are some typical web production setups to help you understand how roles can be divided.

Case 1: One account handles both the template purchase and plan subscription

If the same person builds and manages the site, they can handle both the template purchase and the paid plan subscription from a single account.

  1. The creator purchases the template.

  2. A project with the template applied is created. The project Owner is the creator, and it appears in the creator's project list.

  3. The creator builds the site in that project and subscribes to a paid plan from the same account when needed.

Case 2: Different accounts handle the template purchase and plan subscription

If the site builder and the site operator use different accounts, you can separate the template purchaser (e.g., the client) from the paid plan subscriber (e.g., the creator).

We recommend deciding in advance whose name and payment information will be used for the plan subscription, based on your ongoing management setup.

  1. The client purchases the template.

  2. A project with the template applied is created. The project Owner is the client, and it appears in the client's project list.

  3. The client invites the creator to the project, and the creator builds the site.

  4. When a paid plan is needed, either the client or the creator subscribes to the plan.
