Lists: Set a different image, text, or link for each item

Learn how to set a different image, text, or link for each item in a list (standard list), and how to edit those settings later.

This article explains how to set a different image, text, or link for each item in a list (a standard list), and how to change those contents afterward.

Point:

💡 If you're not sure which type of list you have, see How to tell which type of list or carousel you're using.

💡 If all the nearby boxes changed to the same content while you were editing, see I changed a box's image, text, or link, and other boxes changed to the same content.

💡 To edit the contents of a dynamic list connected to Studio CMS (a CMS list), see CMS lists: Editing images, text, and links.

How boxes in a list item relate to properties

Boxes inside a list item share the same layout across all items in the same column. That means if you edit a box directly, the same content is applied to every box in that column.

To give each item its own content, you need to edit the property table.

Setting this up for the first time

If you haven't created any properties yet, add them first and then link them, as shown below.

Step 1. Add a property

Select the entire list, then add a property of the data type you want (Text, Image, or URL) to the property table in the right panel.

  1. Open the right panel. If it's closed, open it first.

  2. Go to the [Data] tab to show the property table, then add the property you want.
For details on how to add properties, see Lists: List properties > Adding, deleting, reordering, and renaming columns (properties).

Step 2. Link the property to a box

Link the property you added to the target box inside the list item. Once linked, the content you enter for each item is automatically applied to the matching box.

For details on how to link each type of property, see the articles below.

Step 3. Publish your changes

  1. Use Live Preview to check that everything looks the way you expect.

  2. If your site is already published, open the publish panel and update your site. Your changes won't appear on the live site until you do this.

Changing content you've already set up

If the properties have already been added and linked, you can change the content simply by editing the values in the property table.

  1. Open the [Data] tab in the right panel. If the panel is closed, open it first.

  2. In the row for the item you want to change, click the value of the target property and edit it.

  3. Check your changes in Live Preview. If your site is already published, open the publish panel and update your site. Your changes won't appear on the live site until you do this.

About alt text for image properties

If you set alt text directly on an image inside a list item, the same alt text is applied to every item. To set different alt text for each item, see Image boxes: Setting alternative text (alt) > Setting alternative text for images in list items.
