How to connect Search Console

The setup involves steps in both Search Console and your Studio.Design dashboard.

Before you start

  1. Create a Google account before you start. You'll need a Google account to register with Search Console. If you already use AdWords or Google Analytics, we recommend using the same account.

  2. Copy the domain of the website you built with Studio.Design (for example, https://studio.design).

Step 1. Add a property in Search Console

Go to Search Console and register your Studio.Design site's domain as a property.

  1. Go to Search Console and click "Start now."

  2. Sign in with your Google account.

  3. Select "URL prefix" (the option for specifying your site's URL).

  4. Enter the URL of the website you built with Studio.Design (for example, https://studio.design) and click "Continue."
If you already have another property, click "Add property" in the upper left of the screen to proceed.

Note: Studio.Design's Apps integration doesn't support verification using the "Domain" option.

If you want to verify by domain, you'll need to make changes in your DNS settings. If you verify this way, you don't need to register the HTML code in Studio.Design's external Apps (Step 4).

Step 2. Get the ownership verification code

Choose "HTML tag" and grab the verification string to add to Studio.Design.

  1. Select "HTML tag."

  2. Click "Copy," then paste the code into a notepad or similar app.

  3. Take only the part you need from the copied code.

For <meta name="google-site-verification" content="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" />, copy only the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx portion.

Step 3. Set up the Apps integration in Studio.Design

In your Studio.Design dashboard, register the copied code to complete the Search Console connection.

  1. Open [Home] in your Studio.Design dashboard, then select the [Apps] menu.

  2. Click [Google Search Console].

  3. Paste the string you copied in Step 2 and click [Save].

Step 4. Verify ownership

Go back to the Search Console settings screen to complete ownership verification.

  1. Return to the Search Console settings screen.

  2. Click "Verify."

You're all set when you see "Ownership verified."

Step 5. Check that data is being collected

After the connection is set up, your site's performance data will start appearing in Search Console within a few days.

Once data has been collected, you can review your website's performance in Search Console.

Troubleshooting

Here are some common errors you might run into when connecting, and how to check what's going on.

If you see "Ownership verification failed"

The string you copied may be incorrect.

Double-check the string you copied in "Get the ownership verification code":

  1. Make sure the string isn't still in the format <meta name="google-site-verification" content="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" />. If it is, copy only the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx portion and redo the steps in "Set up the Apps integration in Studio.Design."

  2. Check for any extra spaces or missing characters.

If you see "Verification meta tag not found" or "Meta tag is in the wrong location"

The string you saved in Studio.Design may not have been applied to the <head> section of your published site.

  1. Open the [Google Search Console] settings screen under [Apps] and confirm the string you copied is saved correctly.

  2. Update your site. The changes won't appear on your published site until you do this.

  3. Visit your published site and view the page source. Check that <meta name="google-site-verification" content="..."> appears inside the <head> section.

When checking, use your published site's URL, not the live preview URL.

Once you've confirmed all of the above, click "Verify" again in the Search Console settings screen.

The URL you submitted is returning an HTML page instead of an XML sitemap.

  1. Check the URL you submitted to Search Console. Your Studio.Design sitemap URL is "https://(your site domain)/sitemap.xml."

  2. Open the submitted URL directly in your browser and confirm that XML content is displayed.

  3. If the URL is incorrect, resubmit the sitemap using the correct URL (/sitemap.xml).
