When displaying Studio CMS items in a list, you can change the order of items using any of the following three methods.
Point: What is a CMS List?
A CMS List is a type of Dynamic List that references data from inside or outside Studio.Design to display on your site — specifically, one that is linked to internal content data from Studio CMS.
You can also dynamically edit the list based on pre-configured CMS Properties.
Method 1: Use the CMS List sort feature to reorder items
This method uses the sort feature, which lets you change the display order based on Studio CMS properties.
You can sort by publish date, last updated date, title, text, or number.
For more details, see CMS List > Reorder items in a CMS List.
Select the CMS List you want to edit in the Design Editor.
In the Right Panel, open the [Data] tab. If the panel is closed, open the Right Panel first.
In the [Sort] settings, select the property you want to sort by and set the sort order.
Method 2: Adjust the publish date to reorder items
The default display order of a CMS List depends on the type of CMS Model it's linked to.
Article model: Ordered by publish date
Other models: Ordered by item arrangement on the CMS Dashboard
For article models only, you can adjust the publish date after publishing to reorder items in the CMS List without using the sort feature.
For steps on changing the publish date, see CMS Properties: Status and Publish Date > Change the publish date.
Method 3: Create a CMS Collection and reorder items manually
This method uses a CMS Collection to hand-pick specific items and manage their order manually.
It's ideal for curated lists or content you want to display in a fixed order.
For more details, see CMS Collection.
Choosing the right method
Use the table below to help decide which reordering method works best for your needs.
Use case | Recommended method | Notes |
Sort by newest, recently updated, alphabetical, or other rules | Best for automatic sorting based on properties. | |
Keep a chronological base order but fine-tune individual positions | Change the publish date | Handy when you only need to adjust the order of a few items. This method only works for CMS Lists linked to article-type models. |
Hand-pick specific items and display them in a fixed order | Great for campaign sections, featured lists, and similar use cases. |
