Referral sources aren't tracked in GA when installed via GTM

When Google Analytics (Universal Analytics) is installed through Google Tag Manager, converted sessions may not record the correct referral source.

When you install GA through GTM, the referral source isn't recorded correctly. This isn't an issue caused by Studio.Design — it's a known GTM issue that occurs on all Single Page Application sites.

What does this look like? (Example)

  1. A visitor lands on a page built with Studio.Design via a "Google Search Ad"

  2. They submit an inquiry through the contact form (conversion)

  3. In GA, the source is recorded as "Google organic search" instead of "Google Ads"

How can I track this correctly?

We've confirmed that GA tags set up using Studio Apps track the referral source correctly.

If you'd like to install GA through GTM, there's a tag in the Google Tag Manager template gallery that's designed to solve this issue. We've confirmed that this tag works for tracking, but because the GTM configuration is quite complex, we're not able to cover it in this help article. We also can't provide individual support for this setup. Thanks for your understanding.
