Studio.Store Popularity Ranking Algorithm

The template popularity ranking on Studio.Store is based on up-to-date and fair aggregation. This article covers the metrics that factor into the popularity ranking and the measures we use to maintain transparency and fairness.

What is the Studio.Store Popularity Ranking?

On the Studio.Store popularity ranking page, both free and paid templates are sorted based on data from the last 30 days. A key feature is that newly published templates are evaluated equally, regardless of when they were listed. This algorithm is also used for the [Popular] sort option within each category.

Three Factors That Influence the Popularity Ranking

To give a clear picture of how templates are actually being chosen and used, we combine the following three metrics:

Favorites

  • The number of times a template was newly added to favorites over the past 30 days.

  • This reflects the level of interest from users.

Usage Starts

  • The number of times a template was started in the last 30 days. This includes both downloads and duplications (duplication is available for free templates only).

  • This measures how actively users are adopting the template.

Published Sites

  • The number of sites published using the template.

  • This measures real-world usage of the template.

Three Measures to Ensure Fairness

To prevent the ranking from being dominated by templates that have been listed for a long time, we use evaluation methods designed for transparency and fairness.

Rolling Time Window

Rather than using cumulative totals, our data is limited to new activity from the last 30 days. Because only the most recent activity is reflected, every template is evaluated fairly regardless of when it was published.

Regular Updates

The popularity ranking page is automatically recalculated and updated every week, so it quickly reflects changes in trends and popularity.

Reset When Switching Between Free and Paid

When a template is switched between [Free] and [Paid], all popularity ranking metrics are reset. Previous performance is not carried over, which prevents manipulation of the ranking.

Tip: Changing the price of a paid template does not trigger a reset.
